If you’ve been promoted at work in the last few months, what mental changes have you noticed about yourself? Do you have as much time to go to the doctor?
According to the paper (opens PDF), “Do People Become Healthier after Being Promoted?” by Christopher J. Boyce and Andrew J. Oswald at the University of Warwick, “… after being promoted the mental health of managers typically deteriorates, and in a way that goes beyond merely a short-term change.”
The study found that after job promotion, there was an average 10% decrease in mental health. They used the British Household Panel Survey data set, with information on approximately 1,000 individual promotions, collected between 1991-2005.
Those promoted also reported an average 20% decrease in visits to the doctor. It’s believed that the lower number of doctor visits is due to time constraints. No evidence of improved physical health after promotion was found. The findings will be presented at the Royal Economic Society’s conference.
My thoughts.
While these study results certainly don’t mean that you shouldn’t take that next job promotion, the research is still something to consider. Attention to mental health after a job promotion should be a priority. It’s not all about work, after all. Finding ways to minimize overtime and stress are key. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to reach out for help, including discussing the issues with your supervisor who’s likely experienced the same thing!
